Diathermy Frequently Asked Questions
Diathermy involves the use of high energy current to produce intense heat which destroys the lesion. The area to be treated is made numb by applying local anaesthetic and then a fine hair-thin needle is introduced in the lesion to pass the current. The heat produced destroys the tissue of the lesion and the lesion disappears instantaneously.
Diathermy is the most effective method for the removal of broken capillaries, telangiectasia veins and spider on the face. It is also used as a non-surgical method of removing skin tags, milia and other skin lesions.
Short wave diathermy is a safe and highly effective treatment procedure that offers an affordable alternative to other vein removal methods. With minimal down time and long lasting results, this is a fantastic treatment for aesthetically enhancing your skin and giving you a healthy clear complexion.
A very thin needle or probe which is no bigger than an eyelash, is very gently pressed into the thread vein. A tiny zap, sends electrical impulses deep into the broken red vein. This stops the blood from entering into it and so renders it inactive. With skin lesions such moles, skin tags or milia, benign growths are cauterised.
Everyone has different comfort levels, but it is normal to feel some discomfort during these treatments. There will be a pain sensation similar to hot sting. Some areas on the face are more sensitive than others. You will find that the area around the nose will be the most sensitive.
After the treatment mild swelling and redness may result which will resolve in few hours. The superficial sore is left open and allowed to heal on its own and forms a scab. A mild antiseptic cream may be given to apply till the sore heals. A topical anaesthetic can be applied to the area to minimise discomfort if needed.
The treated area may look somewhat red for several days.
Avoid make up for 24 hours, microdermabrasion or skin needling for at least 2 weeks after Diathermy treatment.
Use only products recommended by your therapist.
Do not scratch the area. Use sun protection factor 50 on your skin if you are outdoor.
